In the men’s clash played early on Saturday, the Nigerian side showed determination and attacking flair to overcome their West African rivals.

After a balanced first quarter, Ghana struck first, but Nigeria responded quickly, drawing level through a well-taken goal before sealing victory in the final quarter.

The result gives the Green Sticks a strong start in the competition, boosting their confidence as they aim to qualify for the semifinals.

Coach of the men’s team praised his players’ fighting spirit, noting that their ability to stay composed after conceding early was crucial.

He emphasized the importance of maintaining focus as the team prepares for tougher matches against heavyweights like South Africa and Egypt.

However, it was a different story for the Nigerian women’s side, who suffered a slim 1–0 defeat to Kenya in their opening match.

Despite dominating possession and creating several scoring opportunities, the team failed to convert their chances, allowing Kenya to snatch a decisive goal in the second half.

Coach of the women’s team expressed disappointment at the result but remained optimistic about their chances of bouncing back in subsequent games.

The 2025 Africa Hockey Cup of Nations, featuring top teams from across the continent, runs from October 11 to 18 in Ismailia, Egypt, with both Nigerian teams seeking strong finishes.
