Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel has described the possibility of Tottenham Hotspur suffering relegation from the English Premier League as a “massive disgrace.”
Tottenham currently sit 16th on the table with 29 points from 27 matches, dangerously close to the relegation zone in what has been a turbulent campaign. Mikel did not mince words when assessing the situation.
“It would be a massive disgrace if Tottenham get relegated,” Mikel said. “With the amount of money invested in that club, it should not even be a conversation.”
The former midfielder pointed to the club’s financial outlay in recent seasons, including player recruitment and infrastructure, as evidence that relegation would represent a catastrophic failure.
“When you look at the resources, the squad depth, and the facilities, Tottenham should be competing much higher up the table,” he added.
Despite his harsh assessment, Mikel expressed belief that manager Igor Tudor has the capacity to steady the ship and avoid disaster.
“I believe Igor Tudor will save them. There’s still enough quality in that team to stay up,” he said.
Mikel stressed that relegation would not only hurt the club financially but also damage its global reputation.
“Dropping out of the Premier League affects everything — sponsorships, player morale, fan confidence,” he explained.
He urged the players to take responsibility in the final stretch of the season.
“This is the moment for leaders in that dressing room to step up. Survival is non-negotiable,” he noted.
While acknowledging that the Premier League has become increasingly competitive, Mikel insisted that Tottenham must not allow complacency to define their campaign.
“It would be the biggest disaster to see a club of that size go down,” he concluded.
With the relegation battle intensifying, all eyes will be on Tottenham’s response in the coming weeks.
