Mbachu Plays Down Friendly Concerns: ‘No Games? No Problem, Falcons Still Have Time for WAFCON’

Former Super Falcons star Stella Mbachu has dismissed concerns surrounding the team’s absence from friendly matches during the most recent international window, insisting that the lack of warm-up games does not mean Nigeria is unprepared for the 2025 WAFCON.

While several nations used the window to test new players and fine-tune tactics, the Falcons remained inactive, a situation that has raised eyebrows among fans. But Mbachu believes the decision could be strategic, rather than a sign of poor planning.

“Not playing friendlies is not automatically a bad sign. Nigeria may have strategic or logistical reasons for not scheduling matches at this time,” she said.

Mbachu noted that arranging meaningful friendly games can be complicated, especially when other top nations already have long-established calendars. She added that opponents’ availability, travel costs, and CAF windows often influence decisions far more than supporters realise.

“Sometimes the opponents you want are not available. Sometimes logistics don’t align. It doesn’t mean the team is not preparing,” she explained.

The former winger, who represented Nigeria in multiple World Cups and WAFCONs, insisted that the Falcons have ample time before next year’s tournament to build rhythm and sharpen tactics.

“There is still enough time before WAFCON. And remember, the Falcons have played big matches recently. Those experiences count,” she added.

Mbachu reminded fans that the Super Falcons have historically risen to the occasion at major tournaments, often performing well even with limited friendly games.

“This team has a history of stepping up when it matters. They know what WAFCON requires,” she said.

She also expressed strong confidence in the coaching staff, noting that internal training sessions, tactical drills, and squad cohesion work can be just as valuable as international friendlies.

“It’s not only friendly matches that build readiness. Training camps and tactical work are equally important,” she emphasized.

Mbachu urged fans to remain calm and trust the process, saying Nigeria’s pedigree and experience will ultimately speak for itself.

“The Falcons are never strangers to big tournaments. They know the level. They will be ready when it counts,” she concluded.
