Manchester United’s Patrick Dorgu Opens Up on Nigerian Heritage and How His Name ‘Chinazaekpere’ Shapes His Career

Manchester United defender Patrick Dorgu has revealed how his Nigerian middle name, Chinazaekpere—which means “God answers prayers”—continues to inspire his career and reflects his deep-rooted faith.

The 20-year-old Denmark international, who joined United from Lecce as Ruben Amorim’s first signing in November 2024, has embraced both his Nigerian heritage and religious beliefs since arriving at Old Trafford.

Despite facing criticism for his decision-making in the final third, Dorgu says his faith and family values keep him grounded.

Born in Copenhagen to Nigerian parents, Dorgu made an important request after signing for United: to officially include his middle name Chinazaekpere in recognition of his roots. Speaking recently at a local church in Manchester, the full-back explained the significance.

“Chinazaekpere means ‘God answers prayers.’ That’s what my parents gave to me when I was born,” Dorgu told Manchester United’s official website. “Religion means a lot to me; it’s always been a big part of my life and my family’s. I’ve always been praying since I was young, and I keep praying.”

He added that maintaining his family’s traditions in Manchester has been important:

“Family and the community are what I’ve grown up with in Denmark, so it’s good to try and maintain it here too. If we don’t have a game, I try to be in church on Sundays.”

When asked if prayer gives him an advantage on the pitch, the 1.85m defender smiled:

“I don’t know if it has an advantage in football—it’s about believing. Believing that God has a plan for me and my career.”

Dorgu also reflected on his move to United, describing it as destiny:

“United is a massive club. I always think God has a plan for everything. They were the only team in for me in January, so for me, it had to be here.”

Though still adapting to life in Manchester, the young full-back insists he is learning from every experience:

“I’ve had ups and downs. It’s about believing in myself, giving my best, and learning from mistakes.”

Since Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford, United have yet to find consistency in the Premier League. But Dorgu, guided by faith and heritage, says he remains determined to keep improving in a United shirt
