MANAGING YOUR FINANCES IN CRISES (Part 1)

Not too long ago, I had a very challenging experience. My lovely wife who was pregnant at the time, was diagnosed with fibroid. One particular week in her eight month, she went for routine check up at the hospital. Then the doctor dropped a bomb shell: _”You have to come for emergency surgery next week Monday…to remove both the baby and fibroid.”_

When I got home that evening from work, she gave me the news. I was rudely shocked to say the least. _”How much is it going to cost?”_ I asked her. _”The doctor said we should prepare for between #350-500k;”_ she replied.

That was one of the scariest moments of my life. The uncertainties surrounding the safety of my wife and baby coupled with the sudden demand for hundreds of thousands of naira; shook me to my bones. I summoned courage and decided to be proactive rather than reactive. The first thing we decided to do was to PRAY. It was a very trying hour for us, and we needed the strength that only the Spirit of God could provide. After extensive prayers, I got inspired to seek a second medical opinion on the matter. We consulted with two separate doctors and they gave us their verdict: _”The situation doesn’t warrant an emergency surgery. In fact that would be tantamount to risking her life.”_ One doctor even said that fibroid operation is a very bloody experience, _”I don’t understand why your doctor would ask you to do a Caesarean session and fibroid operation at the same time.”_

We had to make a critical decision: _”Do we go for the emergency operation or not?”_

If you were in my shoes, what would you do?
