Super Falcons interim head coach, Justin Madugu, has admitted that his team had to dig deep to secure a narrow 1-0 win over Botswana, a result that confirmed Nigeria’s place in the quarter-finals of the 13th Women Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
The win at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium on Thursday night pushed the nine-time champions to six points, keeping their title defence on course as they seek a record-extending 10th continental crown. However, Madugu was quick to point out the challenges faced during the hard-fought match.

“We faced a very determined Botswana side,” Madugu said during the post-match press conference. “They lost their first game and came into this match with everything to prove. Some of our players took their foot off the gas, and we saw the effects on the pitch.”
Madugu acknowledged his side’s lack of urgency early in the game and emphasized the need for better focus. “At this level, you can’t afford complacency,” he said. “We were fortunate to get the win, but there’s still a lot of work ahead.”
With the Super Falcons set to face Algeria on Sunday in their final Group B match, Madugu noted that the focus is now on improving performance and tactical execution. “We need to start faster and control the tempo better. Algeria will come with intensity, and we must be ready.”
The coach also commended match-winner Chiwendu Iheozu for her late goal. “She stepped up when we needed her most. It’s that kind of hunger we want across the squad.”
Nigeria will look to end the group stage on a high note against Algeria and carry strong momentum into the knockout rounds.
