Madugu Embraces Pressure as Super Falcons Begin WAFCON Title Defence Preparations

Super Falcons head coach Justin Madugu has acknowledged the weight of expectation that comes with leading Nigeria into another Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign, insisting he is fully prepared to handle the pressure as the team targets a successful title defence in Morocco.

Speaking ahead of the team’s departure for Cameroon for a pair of preparatory international friendlies against the Indomitable Lionesses, Madugu admitted that defending a continental crown naturally brings added scrutiny, but maintained that pressure is part of the responsibility of managing Africa’s most successful women’s national team.

“There will always be pressure when you are coaching the Super Falcons,” Madugu said. “We are the defending champions and the most successful team on the continent, so expectations will always be high. I understand that, and I am ready for the task.”

The coach explained that the upcoming double-header against Cameroon forms a key part of Nigeria’s build-up to the tournament, offering an opportunity to assess player fitness, tactical balance and team chemistry.

“These friendly games are very important for us,” he noted. “They allow us to test different combinations, evaluate our readiness and fine-tune areas we need to improve before the competition begins.”

Madugu also stressed that while Nigeria’s history at the WAFCON commands respect, past achievements alone will not guarantee success.

“We cannot rely on reputation,” he warned. “Other teams have improved significantly, and they will all want to beat Nigeria. We must stay focused, disciplined and hungry.”

The Super Falcons coach praised the attitude within the camp, describing the players as highly motivated and committed to the goal of retaining the title.

“The players know what is at stake,” he added. “They are working hard, showing professionalism and taking every session seriously. That gives me confidence.”

As Nigeria prepares to face Cameroon, Madugu emphasized that the friendlies are not just about results, but about long-term readiness.

“Winning is important, but preparation is even more important at this stage,” he said. “We want to arrive at the WAFCON fully prepared, mentally and physically.”

Madugu concluded by assuring Nigerians that the team will give everything in pursuit of another continental triumph.

“We respect every opponent,” he said, “but our goal is clear — to defend our title and make Nigerians proud once again.”
