Sports247 reports that Madugu made the remarks following the Super Falcons impressive double-header victories over Senegal Women’s National Football Team at the Remo Stars Stadium.
Nigeria recorded a 2-1 win in the first friendly before completing the series with a dominant 3-0 victory.
Speaking after the latest triumph, the Super Falcons coach addressed concerns about the presence of older players in the squad ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
According to Madugu, comparisons between men’s and women’s football often create misconceptions about age and performance.
“Women’s football is not the same as men’s football. For women’s football, it is the older, the better,” he said.
The coach explained that experience often plays a more significant role in the women’s game, with mature players providing leadership, composure, and tactical understanding that can prove decisive in major tournaments.
“Most times people have the wrong perception. Check most of the developed countries, the more mature they are, the better for the country,” Madugu added.
The Super Falcons boss also emphasized the importance of having senior figures within the team environment, noting that experienced players serve as role models for younger members of the squad.
“When you have role models around, it helps the younger ones,” he stated.
Nigeria’s performances against Senegal appeared to support the coach’s argument, as a blend of experienced internationals and emerging talents combined effectively to secure back-to-back victories.
The second encounter saw Joy Omewa score twice before veteran striker Asisat Oshoala added a third goal to complete a convincing 3-0 win.
With WAFCON 2026 on the horizon, Madugu’s comments underline his belief that experience, leadership, and mentorship will be crucial components of Nigeria’s quest to reclaim continental glory.
The coach appears committed to maintaining a balanced squad, one that combines youthful energy with the guidance and influence of seasoned internationals.
