Lookman Endures Tough Home Debut as Atlético Madrid Fall to Betis

It was a frustrating night for Ademola Lookman at the Metropolitano as Atlético Madrid suffered a home defeat to Real Betis in their La Liga Matchday 22 encounter.

The Super Eagles forward made his first home appearance for Diego Simeone’s side, featuring for 70 minutes and working tirelessly across the front line.

Lookman showed flashes of quality, creating one clear chance and stretching the Betis backline with his pace and direct running, but Atlético struggled to convert their moments into goals.

Atlético thought they had found a route back into the game when Diego Llorente turned the ball into his own net, sparking brief celebrations around the stadium.

However, after a VAR review, the goal was disallowed for offside, dealing a major blow to the hosts’ hopes of a comeback.

Betis remained organised and composed, soaking up pressure and capitalising on Atlético’s lack of cutting edge in the final third.

Despite late efforts from the home side, Simeone’s men were unable to force an equaliser, condemning them to a disappointing result in front of their fans.

For Lookman, it was a challenging outing that contrasted with his impressive debut display earlier in the week.

Nevertheless, his movement and willingness to take on defenders offered signs of encouragement as he continues to adapt to Simeone’s system.
