Let Them Doubt Us!’ Ideye Urges Super Eagles to Prove Critics Wrong at AFCON

Former Nigeria international Brown Ideye has urged the Super Eagles to embrace the scepticism surrounding their chances at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, calling on the players to use the doubts as motivation to prove critics wrong.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, Ideye acknowledged that many Nigerians and observers are unsure about the team’s prospects, especially after recent disappointments, but insisted that the quality within the squad should not be questioned.

“I understand why people are sceptical, but I don’t doubt the players’ abilities at all,” Ideye said.

The former striker believes the Super Eagles have enough talent to compete for the trophy if they approach the tournament with the right mindset and confidence.

“This is an opportunity for the players to show everyone what they are capable of. Sometimes doubt from outside can bring out the best in a team,” he added.

Ideye stressed that confidence will be a key factor in Nigeria’s campaign, noting that fear or hesitation could undermine the team’s potential.

“They must play with confidence and belief. Once you start doubting yourself, you give opponents an advantage,” he said.

The former international also urged the players to block out external noise and focus on their collective objective.

“There will always be opinions, criticism and pressure. The important thing is what happens inside the team,” Ideye explained.

He pointed out that Nigeria has historically thrived in tournaments where expectations were mixed or low, adding that AFCON often rewards teams that grow stronger as the competition progresses.

“Nigeria has been in this position before. We’ve gone to tournaments with doubts and come out champions,” he noted.

Ideye maintained full optimism that the Super Eagles can go all the way in Morocco if they remain united and disciplined.

“I believe this team can bring the trophy home. They just need to trust themselves and work for each other,” he said.

He also called on Nigerians to rally behind the team, regardless of doubts.

“Support is important. The players feel it when the nation stands behind them,” Ideye added.

As AFCON approaches, Ideye’s message is clear — scepticism should not weaken the Super Eagles, but rather fuel their determination to succeed and restore pride to Nigerian football.
