Flying Eagles captain Daniel Bameyi has described Nigeria’s campaign at the just-concluded U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt as a vital learning curve that will help shape a stronger and more prepared team ahead of the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile.
Though the team fell short of the ultimate prize, Bameyi — a commanding presence in defence for both Bayelsa United and Nigeria — insisted there were plenty of positives to take away from their bronze-medal finish and World Cup qualification.

“This tournament gave us more than just results — it gave us experience,” Bameyi said.
“Some of the players were playing in their first major tournament, and now they know what it means to play under pressure, in front of large crowds, and with high stakes.”
Bameyi acknowledged that falling short in the semi-final was disappointing, but emphasized that the lessons from Egypt will serve as the foundation for what he hopes will be a more mature and competitive team in Chile.
“We’ve seen where we need to improve — from our finishing to our discipline in certain areas of the pitch,” he said. “This is the time to reflect, work harder, and prepare better.”
The Flying Eagles returned to Nigeria earlier in the week and have been welcomed with widespread praise for securing one of Africa’s four World Cup tickets.
Bameyi expressed gratitude to fans and the Nigeria Football Federation for their support:
“We thank everyone who stood by us — from Nigerians at home to those who cheered us from afar. Your support kept us going. We promise to make you proud on the world stage.”
As the countdown to the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile begins, Bameyi believes Nigeria will not only be better prepared, but will carry the hunger to challenge for global honors.
