England-based Nigerian boxer, Lawrence Okolie has declared that he is targeting more success in the roped square, but admits he will have to work much harder in order to achieve his dreams on the global scale.
After enacting his 12th straight victory at the weekend, sports247.ng can report that Okolie was glad that he was able to retain his his World Boxing Association (WBA) Continental and British Cruiser-weight title.
Okolie achieved the feat after scoring a fourth round knockout victory over Wadi Camacho at Copper Box Arena in London, which helped him regain the Commonwealth belt he relinquished last year to fight Matty Askin for the British Boxing Board of Control (BBB of C) title.
Okolie settled a physical bout after adapting to Spain-born Camacho’s southpaw style to secure a fourth-round TKO victory and extended his professional record to 12 straight wins.
Okolie said it was good for him to shake it off after three or four rounds, after he landed a flurry of shots, including a hard clean right hand, and Camacho took a knee with just over a minute left in the fourth.
He got up and referee Mark Lyson allowed the fight to continue but, as soon as Okolie landed another clear right hand, the arbiter called it off.
Okolie said afterward: “I am doing well, 12-0, nine by stoppage. For 12 fights, I think I have done very well.
“For me, staying at British level is pointless, I need to keep pushing and find my level. If there is a world title, I believe in myself.”
