Lawlessness as Akwa United Defy NFF Orders, Sign New Players Despite Outstanding Debts to Players

Akwa United have come under renewed scrutiny after completing the signing of five new players despite an existing directive barring player registration due to unresolved financial obligations.

The club confirmed the acquisitions as part of efforts to strengthen the squad ahead of the resumption of the second stanza of the Nigeria National League (NNL), scheduled to commence on February 14, 2026.

Akwa United are seeking a stronger and more consistent second-half campaign, with management banking on fresh additions to improve their league standing.

However, the latest signings have raised concerns within football circles, as Akwa United are reportedly still in default of a judgment sum ordered against the club since February 2025.

Under Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) regulations, clubs that fail to comply with such rulings are prohibited from registering new players until the indebtedness is fully settled.

It will be recalled that at the start of the season, the Players Status and Arbitration Committee (PSAC) controversially lifted an earlier transfer ban imposed on Akwa United.

The decision was based on a payment proposal submitted by the club, committing to fully defray the outstanding judgment sum by December 2025.

That proposal, sources confirm, has not been honoured. With the club now again in default, questions have been raised over whether Akwa United will be permitted to register the newly signed players.

Observers note that allowing registration in spite of the breach would amount to a waiver of sanctions arising from the club’s own unfulfilled payment proposal.

Attention has now turned to the Nigeria Football Federation and its arbitration body, as stakeholders await their response to what has been described as a fresh test of regulatory enforcement.

How the NFF and PSAC address the situation is expected to set an important precedent on compliance, discipline, and respect for contractual and arbitration decisions within Nigerian football.
