Former Super Eagles midfielder Dimeji Lawal says Nigeria’s 4–1 extra-time victory over Gabon is further proof that the team has finally developed the maturity and mentality required for top-level football, insisting the players now understand that nothing short of World Cup qualification is acceptable.
Speaking after the semi-final triumph in Rabat, Lawal said the performance—particularly in extra time—showed a level of composure and discipline that has been missing in recent years. He explained that while Nigeria has never lacked talent, the problem has often been a lack of focus and mental sharpness in decisive moments.

According to him, Thursday night’s response was “exactly what a big team should do.”
He said the ability to regroup emotionally after conceding a late equaliser from Mario Lemina in the 89th minute was a sign that the squad has grown significantly under Eric Chelle. “A younger team would have collapsed,” he said. “But these boys kept their heads and played their best football when it mattered most.”
Lawal added that players such as Victor Osimhen, Alex Iwobi and Wilfred Ndidi have now taken leadership responsibility seriously, while the introduction of younger names like Benjamin Frederick and Akor Adams has added hunger to the group.
He stressed that the biggest takeaway from the win is the shift in mentality. “They are already thinking ahead, not celebrating like they’ve achieved anything yet,” he said. “That’s the mindset great teams have.”
Lawal urged the Eagles to remain calm, avoid complacency and approach Sunday’s final against DR Congo with the same intensity. He stated that the team must understand that World Cup qualification is non-negotiable.
“Getting this far means nothing if they don’t finish the job,” he warned. “But if they play with the same character they showed last night, Nigeria will be in the intercontinental playoff—and then in the World Cup.”
