Lawal Defends NFF Over Super Eagles Friendly Opponents

Former Nigeria international Dimeji Lawal has come to the defence of the Nigeria Football Federation over the choice of friendly opponents lined up for the Nigeria national football team during the next international window.

Lawal dismissed criticism surrounding the proposed matches against Jordan and Iran, insisting that modern football has evolved to a point where no opponent can be considered easy.

“There are no easy teams in football anymore,” Lawal said.

The former winger explained that international friendlies are primarily meant to help the coaching staff assess players, test strategies and build cohesion within the squad rather than simply focusing on the reputation of the opposition.

“Friendly games are opportunities for the coach to test different tactical ideas,” he noted.

Lawal pointed out that several factors often influence the arrangement of international friendlies, including scheduling conflicts, logistics and the willingness of other national teams to travel.

“There are many obstacles when trying to organise international matches,” he explained.

According to him, these challenges sometimes limit the options available to football federations when selecting opponents for friendly matches.

“It is not always easy to invite top teams for games in Nigeria,” he added.

Lawal stressed that the most important objective during such international windows is to improve the team’s chemistry and provide opportunities for players to gain experience at international level.

“The focus should be on building the team and preparing for future competitions,” he said.

He also warned against underestimating any opponent, noting that teams considered smaller in the past have made significant progress in recent years.

“Football has developed globally and every team can be competitive,” he stated.

Lawal concluded by urging Nigerians to support the national team regardless of the opposition they face.

“What matters most is the progress of the Super Eagles,” he said.
