The chairman of Lagos State Flag Football Association, Mr Bodunrin Sasore (aka BB) has disclosed that one of the body’s pivotal targets is to discover a world renowned Nigerian superstar for the sport in the not too distant future.
While expressing pride and delight at the huge leadership role that Lagos State is playing in spreading knowledge about flag football across Nigeria, ‘BB’ added that the average African is physically endowed to be a star in the game that involves males and females playing together in the same team.
He added in an exclusive interview with Sports247 that the huge impact being created on a weekly basis by Showtime Flag Football League (SFFL) has taken love for the innovative sport from its iconic venue in Lekki, Lagos into a fast-growing fanfare all across Nigeria.
‘BB’ further disclosed, “Flag football is very exciting, and it’s growing faster than almost any other sport in the world right now. In fact, recent surveys show that flag football and cricket are currently the fastest growing sports in the world.”
He then spoke glowingly about the role being played by Lagos State as a forerunner for the growth and spread of flag football in Nigeria, then hinted that an even greater impact is coming from The Centre of Excellence to further propel the coed sport that was invented in United States of America.
Sasore added, “We are gaining ground every day, and we believe it’s going to spread like fire in Nigeria. Without being too proud, we know that Lagos is the hub of sporting activities in Nigeria. So, it’s a thing of joy and privilege that I am representing the Lagos State chapter.
“It’s with boldness that I also say everyone should get ready for the seeds of great activities that we can champion for flag football here in Lagos and take to the world.”
The exuberant and charismatic flag football buff then unfolded details of the immediate plans that Lagos State Flag Football Association is unfolding in liaison with stakeholders of the sport, as they seek to create a louder buzz in days to come.
‘BB’ disclosed, “We are very focused on ensuring full development of flag football in Nigeria. Our target is to ensure we spread this sport around the country. We also have our eyes on the international and global areas of proliferation.
“We believe that, in this part of the world, there are natural athletes who can excel in flag football. It entails those things we are all good at, which can help us blend ourselves easily to flag football … speed, strength, athletic reflexes, and physical attributes.”
The administrative supremo of flag football in Lagos State concluded by expressing optimism that the ongoing efforts of fans, stakeholders, and promoters of flag football will help Nigeria achieve an accelerated growth in the sport and the country will quickly become a force to be reckoned with globally.
“All these show that there’s a really strong chance of getting homegrown talent that can become global stars of flag football from Nigeria. That’s what everyone should keep their eyes on; though we are at present focusing on proliferating the sport locally for now,” Sasore posited.
He chipped in a hint that an outreach scheme to teach the rudiments of flag football to students in secondary schools across Lagos State is also in the pipeline.
