Lagos State has received widespread commendation for its outstanding achievements in sports development, with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and several national sports leaders praising the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) for transforming the state into Nigeria’s leading hub of sporting excellence.
Governor Sanwo-Olu lauded the Commission for its extraordinary efforts, especially following the historic victory of Team Lagos Under-15 athletes, who topped the medal table for the first time at the 2025 National Youth Games in Asaba.

The Governor described the feat as a testament to Lagos’s status as the epicentre of grassroots and developmental sports in Nigeria.
At the grand finale of the E1 Lagos Grand Prix, Africa’s first electric powerboat championship, the Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, also commended the LSSC under the leadership of its Director General, Mr. Lekan Fatodu, for driving visible transformation in the state’s sports sector in less than two years.
Dr. Hamzat noted that the success recorded across various sports disciplines reflects the Commission’s strategic approach to advancing youth engagement, talent development, and international recognition for Lagos.
The National Sports Commission (NSC), led by Mallam Shehu Dikko and Hon. Bukola Olopade, also praised Lagos for the “wonders, innovations, and inclusivity” it has brought to Nigerian sports in recent times.
In recent months, Lagos has become a vibrant centre for local and international sporting activities, hosting major events in Archery, Fencing, Badminton, Table Tennis, Athletics, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), and Boxing, among others. These events have attracted thousands of foreign athletes and sports enthusiasts, creating economic opportunities while enhancing Lagos’s global reputation.
Through deliberate policy efforts and strategic partnerships, the Lagos State Sports Commission continues to harness sports as a tool for economic growth, social cohesion, and youth empowerment.
With renewed government support and a growing portfolio of international events, Lagos is solidifying its place as Nigeria’s home of sporting innovation and excellence.
