Lagos State Dissolves “Senior Team Lagos” Under DG Lekan Fatodu, Citing Underperformance & Protests Over Unfounded Reward Claims

The Lagos State Sports Commission has officially dissolved its Senior Team Lagos, a decision announced by Director General Olalekan “Lekan” Fatodu, in response to recent protests over supposed financial rewards and a series of lacklustre performances at major national competitions.

The move, the Commission says, aims to infuse fresh discipline, renewed energy, and stronger competitive spirit into the state’s sports program.

It follows discontent among certain former or purported team members who staged a protest at the Alausa Secretariat.

These protesters were demanding cash awards they claimed were due because of the state’s sub-par showing at the 2020 and 2024 National Sports Festivals.

In his statement, DG Fatodu described the demands as “unmerited,” emphasising that rewards for outstanding performance are discretionary, not automatic.

He reiterated that Lagos State has always met its obligations—paying athletes’ allowances, supporting their welfare, funding training programs, and ensuring proper upkeep during competitions.

Fatodu expressed disappointment not only at the performances but at the conduct of those leading the protests, some of whom he characterised as impostors claiming to represent the dissolved team.

He noted that intelligence reports suggest the protests were orchestrated in reaction to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s plan to host the victorious Under-15 Team Lagos, recent champions in Asaba—a historic first for the state.

Warned too were any future acts of misconduct—including assault, harassment, or attempts to disrupt the Commission’s operations—which he said would be met with strict legal consequences.

The Commission is committed, he said, to upholding discipline, respect for due process, and merit as core principles in its operations.

With the dissolution, Fatodu signalled an opening for new athletes, urging those with talent, dedication, and a readiness to work hard to step forward. He emphasised that building a system that honours merit and fosters excellence is key to raising a new generation of athletes who will make Lagos proud.
