Lagos Legends Club Tips Super Eagles For AFCON Success

More encouraging words of support are pouring in for the Super Eagles of Nigeria, ahead of its titanic AFCON 2022 group opener against seven-time winners, Egypt on Tuesday in Garoua, Cameroun.

The latest support came from a group of former elite footballers who plied their trades in Lagos, under the aegis of Lagos Legends Club (LLC).

In its message signed by Monday Kanu on behalf of the group, it urged the Super Eagles to be brave, courageous, and confident in the renowned characteristics of the average Nigerian.

Kanu said,” This team has all the potentials to conquer Africa and the world, beginning with this championship in Cameroun.

On his part, the convener of LLC, ex-Nigeria international Waidi Akanni, stated, “All of us at Lagos Legends Club believe in the team and particularly, in the technical expertise of the highly experienced Coach Austin Eguavoen, who of course, also once played football in Lagos with the ACB football club.”

Akanni, who was a former Lagos FA chairman went on to rally all football-loving Nigerians to pray and support the team in their bids to bring glory and honor to the country.

Meanwhile, On Saturday, Italy –based defender Tyrone Ebuehi joined up with the squad in Garoua, meaning only left-back Jamilu Collins is still expected at the team’s Hotel Ribadou de Garoua. The Eagles file out against the Pharaohs, in what is potentially the pick of the group’s battles, at the Stade Roumdé Adjia from 5 pm Cameroon time on Tuesday.

Nigeria is led by Augustine Eguavoen, who was on-field captain when the Eagles won the title in Tunisia in 1994, and then coached the Eagles to third place in Egypt 12 years later. In 2004, he was assistant to Coach Christian Chukwu when the Eagles picked up the bronze medals in Tunisia.

Soft-spoken but tactically astute, Eguavoen is the only man to have coached Nigeria to win all three group phase matches at the AFCON – when they defeated Ghana, Zimbabwe, and Senegal in Port Said at the 2006 finals in Egypt. His team also bundled out Cup holders in Tunisia after a pulsating penalty shootout in the quarter-finals.
