Nigeria has officially intensified preparations for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, with the National Sports Commission (NSC) emphasising early planning, strategic coordination and athlete-focused development as essential ingredients for achieving success on the global stage.
Sports247 reports that the Director-General of the NSC, Bukola Olopade, disclosed the development following his participation in a pre-Games meeting involving international Olympic stakeholders in Los Angeles, United States.
Olopade attended the engagement alongside the President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Engr. Habu Gumel, as Nigeria began laying the groundwork for its participation in the world’s biggest multi-sport event.
Speaking about the significance of the visit, Olopade stressed that achieving success at the Olympics requires deliberate planning rather than last-minute arrangements.
According to the NSC Director-General, preparations should begin well before athletes arrive at competition venues. He explained that Nigeria must draw lessons from previous Olympic experiences while ensuring that athletes receive the necessary support to compete effectively.
The approach, he noted, involves providing access to appropriate training facilities, competitive opportunities and coordinated preparation programmes.
For Olopade, the objective is to create an environment where Nigerian athletes can focus on delivering their best performances without unnecessary distractions.
‘We Are Not Going to Los Angeles Just to Participate’
The NSC boss made it clear that Nigeria’s ambitions for the Los Angeles Games extend beyond simply making up the numbers. He emphasised that Team Nigeria must approach the competition with the determination to compete with distinction against the world’s leading sporting nations.
The commission’s strategy, according to Olopade, will prioritise performance-driven preparation and improved coordination among relevant sporting bodies.
This approach is expected to guide the country’s preparations as the countdown to the Games continues. The participation of Olopade and NOC President Habu Gumel in the Los Angeles meeting reflects the importance of cooperation between Nigeria’s major sports administration bodies.
The NSC and NOC are working towards establishing a coordinated pathway that places athletes at the centre of Olympic preparations.
Such collaboration is intended to ensure that planning, athlete development and competition readiness receive sustained attention ahead of 2028.
Olopade reiterated the commission’s commitment to building structures capable of supporting Nigerian athletes throughout their preparation programmes.
Another major focus of Nigeria’s early preparations is the need to learn from previous Olympic experiences. Olopade believes identifying past challenges and addressing them early will be important in improving the country’s competitiveness.
Rather than waiting until the final stages of qualification or the Games themselves, the NSC intends to encourage proactive preparation.
The emphasis on early coordination could also provide sporting federations with more time to identify athletes’ needs and develop suitable training and competition schedules.
The 2028 Olympic Games are scheduled to take place in Los Angeles, United States, from July 14 to 30, 2028. With the Games approaching, Nigeria’s sports authorities are seeking to establish a more structured and coordinated preparation process.
For Nigerian athletes hoping to represent the country, the early planning initiative signals the importance being placed on competitive readiness and long-term development.
As Team Nigeria begins its journey towards Los Angeles 2028, the message from the National Sports Commission is clear: Olympic success must be built through early preparation, deliberate investment in athletes and effective coordination long before the opening ceremony.
