Kwara SWAN Lament Governor’s Neglect Despite Kwara United’s Triumphant Federation Cup Coverage

The Kwara State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has extended heartfelt congratulations to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq on Kwara United FC’s historic victory in the 2025 President Federation Cup.

At the same time, the association is calling for greater inclusion and support for media professionals in the state’s sports development framework.

In a statement jointly signed by the association’s Vice Chairman, Toyin Saheed, and Secretary, Dare Kuti, SWAN hailed the governor’s unwavering commitment to sports, which they said had culminated in the club’s national success.

“Governor AbdulRazaq’s consistent support and investment in sports, particularly his sponsorship of Kwara United FC, have brought this sweet and historic victory,” the statement read.

“The Federation Cup triumph is a testament to what vision and sustained effort can accomplish.”

While acknowledging the governor’s commendable role, SWAN emphasized the indispensable contribution of the media in promoting and sustaining sports growth.

The association urged the state government to adopt a more holistic approach to sports development by deliberately involving sports journalists as strategic stakeholders.

“The media, through SWAN, has always played a critical role in sports development across Nigeria. Our association is globally affiliated with reputable organizations like FIFA, the IOC, CAF, and the NFF,” the statement added.

SWAN also lauded the symbolic recognition of Iya Elepa, a grassroots trader and passionate fan of Kwara United, describing it as a positive step toward connecting sports to local enterprise.

However, the group expressed disappointment that similar appreciation was not extended to sports journalists who tirelessly documented and promoted the team’s journey to victory.

The statement revealed that Kwara SWAN members had to fund their own travel and accommodation to cover Kwara United’s final match at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos, with no financial or logistical support from the state government.

“In contrast, Ebonyi State’s government supported both Abakaliki FC and its SWAN chapter, including rewarding journalists who followed the team to the final. This show of appreciation and support is what we believe Kwara can also emulate,” the association noted.

SWAN maintained that Kwara United’s victory was a shared achievement for the entire state, including the media professionals whose coverage helped amplify the story to national and international audiences.

“This victory is not just for the team or the government—it’s a collective triumph. The role of the media in building this narrative cannot be overlooked,” a senior member of SWAN stated.

The association concluded by appealing to Governor AbdulRazaq to implement improved support structures for sports journalists in the state. They emphasized that proper recognition and facilitation of the media would not only boost morale but also enhance the state’s image in the broader sports community.

“This is a sincere and respectful call for inclusion, appreciation, and institutional support. Kwara SWAN has contributed meaningfully and deserves better,” the statement concluded.
