In a bid to maintain Enyimba’s winning momentum, the legendary Nigerian footballer Kanu Nwankwo, aged 46, has been appointed as the team’s new leader.

With an illustrious career behind him, Kanu is expected to bring his expertise and experience to guide Enyimba to success in the upcoming CAF Champions League and the 2023/24 season’s league and Federation Cup competitions. His predecessor had already achieved notable victories in these competitions on multiple occasions.

Taking on the role of Enyimba chairman, Kanu will work closely with his former teammate from Ajax Amsterdam, Finidi George, who has been appointed as the club’s coach.

The duo’s partnership will reignite the memories of their successful time together under Louis van Gaal’s leadership, when they were part of the victorious UEFA Champions League-winning team in 1995.

Kanu rose to prominence in 1993 when he became the top scorer at the FIFA U-17 World Cup hosted by Japan. His exceptional skills and goal-scoring prowess continued to impress, and three years later, he captained the Nigerian national team to a gold medal at the 1996 Olympics. One of the most memorable moments of that tournament was Kanu’s crucial goal in the semifinals against Brazil, which ultimately decided the outcome of the match.

Having enjoyed a remarkable career spanning over two decades, Kanu has played for esteemed clubs such as Inter Milan, West Bromwich Albion, and Portsmouth. However, it was his time with Arsenal that solidified his status as one of the greats.

Kanu was a vital member of the iconic Arsenal ‘Invincibles’ team managed by Arsene Wenger, which achieved an incredible feat of going unbeaten throughout the entire English Premier League season.

With Kanu’s appointment as Enyimba chairman, Nigerian football enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating the team’s future under his leadership.

His wealth of experience, combined with the expertise of Finidi George, promises an exciting and successful era for Enyimba Football Club as they set their sights on conquering both domestic and international competitions.
