The Kaduna Polo Club, hailed as the premier polo center in northern Nigeria, is embarking on a journey of repositioning with the recent election of Mohammed Babangida as its new president.
On April 29, 2023, club members elected Babangida to lead the new management committee, tasked with revitalizing the club and elevating its standing within the continent.
During the election, the club members had the opportunity to reflect on the past year, reviewing the club’s accounts, expenditures, and electing members to the executive management committee. The name on everyone’s lips was that of Garkuwan Yamman Katsina, Alhaji Muhammad Babangida, the esteemed patron of the El-Amin Polo Team and former first vice president of the club.
The newly formed committee also includes Brigadier General Kapeh Kazir as the first vice president, Mohammed Baba Askira as the second vice president, and Atiku Abubakar Saleh, Baraden Maru, assuming the role of tournament manager.
In his acceptance speech, Babangida commended the outgoing president, Alhaji Suleman Abubakar, for his peaceful leadership and commitment to his word. He expressed his dedication to building upon the club’s legacy and enhancing the sport’s presence within the polo fraternity. Babangida implored members to treat one another with dignity and respect, aiming to foster a more welcoming and desirable club environment for all members and the wider polo family.
The club’s annual tournament, scheduled for late October to early November 2023, is generating immense excitement among polo enthusiasts. The recently upgraded Pitch 1, where the prestigious Georgian Cup is held, is fueling the anticipation for an unprecedented display of polo prowess in Kaduna this year.
With the election of Mohammed Babangida and the concerted efforts of the new management committee, the Kaduna Polo Club is poised for a remarkable revival. Enthusiasts across the country are eagerly awaiting the upcoming tournament, expecting it to showcase the finest display of skill and sportsmanship, solidifying Kaduna’s status as a prominent polo destination.
