Just-In: Canada Drain D’Tigress, Set All-Time U19 Triples Record At FIBA U19WWC

Less than 24 hours after Nigeria’s historic upset win over China, the Junior D’Tigress were brought back to earth by a record-breaking Canadian side at the FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup on Saturday.

Canada delivered a dazzling display of perimeter shooting to defeat Nigeria 113-42, setting an all-time tournament record by making 20 three-pointers — the most ever recorded by any team, male or female, at a FIBA U19 World Cup event.

The North Americans came out firing from long range and never let up. Eight different players connected from deep, led by Agot Makeer, who drained 5 of her 7 attempts en route to 18 points. Mila Holloway was also instrumental, orchestrating the offense with 9 assists.

The performance shattered the previous U19 record of 19 triples, jointly held by the USA, who matched that number during a recent tournament night in Lausanne.

The timing of Canada’s record added a dramatic twist, as Australia’s Gems were also on a three-point spree in a simultaneously played fixture against Brazil. The Australians fell just short of the milestone with 16 made triples in an 87-59 victory, tying the fourth-highest total in event history.

This marks a stunning reversal of fortunes for the Nigerian team, who had stunned China on Friday to claim their first-ever win at the U19 Women’s World Cup. But against Canada’s hot hands, the D’Tigress were unable to mount any form of resistance.

Canada’s dominance came just a day after Israel delivered their third-best showing from beyond the arc, sinking 17 triples in a narrow 86-82 loss to Hungary — underlining what has been a historic weekend for long-range shooting at the U19 showpiece.

With this victory, Canada reinforced their championship credentials while making their mark in the FIBA history books
