Former Nigerian national team coach James Peters has expressed confidence that the Super Eagles can still secure a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup as they prepare for the playoff series in Morocco.
Peters acknowledged that the team has some weaknesses but believes that if the squad maximises its attacking potential, these shortcomings can be mitigated.

Speaking to Sports247, Peters emphasised the importance of playing to the team’s strengths, noting that Nigeria possesses one of the most potent attacks in African football.
“If the team maintains efficiency in its attack, the weaknesses in other areas will not bey noticed,” he said. Peters added that a focused, disciplined performance in front of goal could prove decisive against tough opponents like Gabon.
The former coach urged the players to approach the playoffs with determination and composure, highlighting that mental toughness often separates successful teams from the rest.
He also encouraged the coaching staff to ensure that tactics are optimised to get the best out of the forwards and midfielders.
Peters further stated that, while challenges exist, the team has shown enough quality and cohesion in recent matches to suggest they are capable of overcoming them.
He called on Nigerian fans to continue supporting the Super Eagles and maintain belief in the squad during the high-stakes playoff fixtures.
“Football is about taking chances and being clinical in attack,” Peters concluded. “Nigeria has the players to make the difference, and I am confident that if they play to their strengths, they will qualify for the World Cup.”
