James O. James: Akwa Ibom is Prepared to Rewrite the Narratives at 2024 Gateway Games

A New Dawn for Akwa Ibom in Sports

Speaking to journalists after the ceremony, James O. James praised the current sports leadership in Akwa Ibom, attributing their renewed zeal and preparation to the passion of the state governor and the appointment of a seasoned sports administrator.

“We have a governor who loves sports. He is fondly called ‘the golden man’ because of his passion,” James noted.

“He appointed Elder Paul Bassey a foremost sports journalist and former Chairman of Akwa United FC as Commissioner for Sports. That’s a round peg in a round hole. So we are out this time to make a difference.”

Challenging the Dominance

On the perennial dominance of Delta and Edo States, James was optimistic but realistic.

“Definitely, we are going to do our best. We may not surpass them in a day, but we’re focused on closing the gap gradually. And before you know it, we might even overtake them,” he said confidently.

According to James, Akwa Ibom’s early arrival at the camp is proof of serious commitment and planning.

“We were one of the first teams to arrive. That’s because the governor ensured that funds were released in time for our preparation. Every gold medalist will be appreciated. That kind of motivation is something we’ve not had in a while,” he said.

The state is fielding athletes in 23 sports, and expectations are high.

“We expect every sport to deliver at least one gold medal. Some, like weightlifting, kickboxing, and athletics, can give us up to seven medals. If that happens, we’re confident we can finish among the top three,” James projected.

James expressed satisfaction with the hosting of the Games in Ogun State.

“The atmosphere is exciting. Everything I’ve seen in Ogun so far is impressive. It’s shaping up to be a great experience, and we look forward to making a difference here.”

As the competition intensifies, Akwa Ibom’s delegation isn’t just here to participate, they are out to shine, challenge the giants, and leave a mark on the 2024 Gateway Games.
