A female candidate who scored 310 marks in this year’s Universities Joint Matriculation Examination (aka JAMB) on Friday returned in style to motivate incoming prefects at the school she will soon be saying goodbye to, Sports247 reports.
It was a day of critical thinking, solemn emotions, motivational action and inspirational speeches, as the outgoing head girl, Okoh Onyinye led the way in the formal handover of leadership to incoming prefects at Distinction Gate College, Ikotun, Lagos State.
No one knew it would turn out to be a most memorable day when the school’s consultant, Mr Acholor, announced earlier in the week that a special inauguration ceremony would be organised to usher in a new set of prefects for the school located along the ever busy road leading from Igando to Ikotun.
However, it turned out to be an epochal moment, as some parents, well-wishers, university undergraduates and students from other secondary schools in the neighbourhood turned up to witness the occasion at the vastly populated school fondly called DGC.
Proprietor of the school, Mr Devi Gilbert Sisso (aka DG) was grinning from ear-to-ear, as he welcomed everyone to the event, which was specially coordinated by the school’s Home Economics teachers assisted by some of the prefects and a couple of non-academic staff.
The day’s highpoint turned out to be the moment for the official handover, on behalf of the outgoing prefects, by Onyinye Okoh, who drew a huge round of applause when it was announced that she recently scored 310 points in this year’s JAMB … despite it being generally adjudged as the worst in terms of overall poor performances by candidates in recent years.
The applause got even louder when the announcer further disclosed that Miss Okoh recently represented the fast-growing school during a programme at Radio Nigeria Ikoyi, and she was consequently introduced as a living example for the incoming prefects to emulate.
The new head boy, David Daniel, and head girl, Iji Elizabeth, were then called upon to step forward for their acceptance speeches, after which the JAMB 2025 heroine was called on to speak, which became an opportunity for her to give words of advice and encouragement to the incoming troupe of prefects.
“I am happy to be here standing before you and handing over to the new head boy and head girl. I am happy to also be an example for you to follow as you take over the baton.
“I urge you to take discipline as the key word that will guide you to success. It is discipline that allows you to keep going when others give up, and it makes you stand out.
“It is what helps you to keep going when the road is rough and to overcome challenges when it’s not convenient. With discipline, you can be the best you want to be,” Miss Okoh affirmed.
The event ended with one of the parents called upon to pray and pin badges on each of the prefects, each branded with specific inscriptions to officially indicate their portfolios.
