Nigeria’s rising tennis star Seun Ogunsakin delivered a remarkable comeback to book his place in the semi-finals of the J200 Africa Regional Championships in Cairo, Egypt.
The 17-year-old, seeded third in the tournament, showed resilience and class as he battled past Egypt’s Eyad Reda Ezzat Mohamed Sherif in a gripping quarter-final encounter.
After dropping the opening set 4-6, Ogunsakin responded emphatically, dominating the next two sets 6-1, 6-0 to seal victory in style.
The win continues an impressive run for the Nigerian, who has been in strong form throughout the tournament.
On his way to the last eight, Ogunsakin cruised past Zimbabwe’s Bryne Edwin Dube 6-1, 6-0 in the opening round before dispatching Algeria’s Yacine Meghari 6-1, 6-2 in the second round.
His campaign in Cairo is part of a broader push to strengthen his global junior ranking and secure qualification for major junior Grand Slam tournaments later this year.
Having already climbed to a career-high ranking inside the world’s top 70 in 2026, Ogunsakin remains one of Nigeria’s brightest prospects in international tennis.
Next up, however, is another stern test.
Ogunsakin will face Egypt’s Marwan Ehab in the semi-finals, setting up a second consecutive clash against a home favorite.
With the crowd likely to be firmly behind his opponent, the Nigerian will need to summon the same fighting spirit that powered his quarter-final comeback.
With momentum on his side and confidence growing, Ogunsakin now stands just one win away from reaching the final, another significant milestone in what is fast becoming a breakthrough season for the young star.
