Iyama Backs Chelle, Says NFF Should Secure Super Eagles Coach Long Term

Former Nigeria Football Federation board member Emeka Iyama has added his voice to growing calls for the federation to move quickly and secure Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle with a contract extension, describing the Franco-Malian tactician as the right man for the job.

Speaking on the future of the national team, Iyama said Chelle has clearly justified the confidence placed in him since his appointment and deserves the opportunity to continue building a competitive Super Eagles side without distractions.

“From what we have seen so far, Eric Chelle has proved that he understands the job,” Iyama said. “He has brought structure, discipline and clarity to the team, and that is something Nigerian football has been yearning for.”

Iyama stressed that stability at the technical level is crucial if Nigeria is serious about sustained success at international tournaments. According to him, frequent changes in coaching personnel have historically slowed the progress of the national team, making continuity a key ingredient for long-term growth.

“You cannot keep changing coaches and expect miracles,” he explained. “Football development is a process. When you find a coach who is getting it right, you give him time and the necessary support to succeed.”

The former administrator noted that Chelle’s ability to manage players, earn their respect and gradually impose his philosophy shows he is capable of leading the Super Eagles into a new era. He added that backing the coach with a renewed deal would send a strong message of confidence to both players and fans.

“A contract extension will remove uncertainty,” Iyama said. “It will also show the players that the federation believes in the project and is committed to seeing it through.”

Iyama further warned that leaving Chelle’s future unresolved could expose the team to unnecessary distractions, especially with interest reportedly coming from clubs and other national teams. He urged the NFF to act proactively rather than wait until the situation becomes complicated.

“The NFF must not wait until other offers start coming in,” he concluded. “They should secure him now, allow him to focus fully on his job and give Nigerian football the stability it needs to move forward.”
