Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has joined millions of Nigerians in celebrating the international retirement of captain William Troost-Ekong, describing him as a leader who gave everything for the country and whose presence will be deeply missed within the squad.
Iwobi, who has shared the pitch with Ekong for years, said the defender’s influence went far beyond his defensive abilities ,he was the emotional anchor of the Super Eagles.
“He gave his best every single time. We’ll definitely miss him , he’s a leader on and off the pitch,” Iwobi said.
Troost-Ekong announced his retirement shortly before Nigeria’s preparations intensified for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where he had hoped to lead the team but chose instead to step aside for a new generation.
Despite the emotional farewell, Iwobi insisted the Super Eagles remain focused and determined to make Nigeria proud at the tournament, which kicks off on 21 December 2025.
“Preparations are ongoing. The team is getting ready, and I’ll be joining the squad to represent Nigeria at AFCON,” the Fulham midfielder confirmed.
Iwobi expressed full confidence in the players and technical crew, stressing that the team has enough leadership within the dressing room to fill the void left by Ekong.
“We have leaders in the team. We have experience. We’ll support each other and push together,” he added.
He said Ekong’s career and commitment should serve as an inspiration for the squad as they attempt to reclaim the AFCON title.
“He set an example for all of us. His passion and professionalism should motivate the team to give everything in Morocco,” Iwobi said.
The midfielder also noted that Troost-Ekong will remain part of the Super Eagles family, even from outside the pitch.
“He may not be playing anymore, but he’ll always be part of us. Nigeria owes him a lot,” he said.
Iwobi concluded by reaffirming his belief that the team will rise to the occasion.
“We’re ready. We want to make the nation proud. AFCON is a big opportunity, and we’re going for it.”
