Speaking during a round-table discussion ahead of the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, Iwobi explained that African football offers something different from any other competition in the world.
“African football is entertainment. It’s like a celebration for the fans,” Iwobi said.
The Fulham star highlighted the colour, noise, culture, and emotion that define AFCON, noting that matches often feel like festivals rather than ordinary football games.
“There’s music, dancing, passion, and constant excitement. That’s what makes it special — the fans bring energy every single minute,” he added.
Iwobi said the emotional connection between players and supporters is much stronger at AFCON, where national pride fuels performances on the pitch.
“You feel the connection instantly. When you play AFCON, you are playing for millions of people, and you can feel it in the stadiums,” he explained.
The 29-year-old believes this atmosphere is what makes AFCON unpredictable and difficult, stressing that reputation alone means nothing once the tournament starts.
“Anything can happen. That’s African football. Every game is a battle, and every team believes,” he said.
Iwobi also noted that AFCON provides players with an opportunity to express themselves freely, blending flair with intensity.
“There’s freedom, creativity, and fight. It’s not robotic. It’s football with emotion,” he added.
As Nigeria prepare for the tournament in Morocco, Iwobi said the team understands the responsibility that comes with representing a football-loving continent.
“We know what AFCON means to Nigerians. We want to give them something to enjoy and be proud of,” he stated.
He concluded by reiterating what makes African football stand out globally.
“It’s constant entertainment. That’s the beauty of it. That’s why AFCON is always special,” Iwobi said.
