Fulham of England midfielder, Alex Iwobi has acknowledged that a daunting task awaits him and other players in Nigeria’s national team and admitted that the Super Eagles must work hard in order to pick a 2026 FIFA World Cup spot.
Sports247 reports that the Eagles are set to tango Gabon next week Thursday in the first semi-final of the World Cup qualification play-offs, and Iwobi admitted that the squad cannot afford to lose that match.

However, the former Arsenal and Everton of England dazzler, who recently became the first Nigerian to play 300 games in the English Premier League, expressed hope that Nigeria’s stars will shine next week in Rabat, Morocco – just as they did at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Iwobi recalled, “We showcased our ability at the AFCON last year, and we were just unfortunate not to win it. We were obviously runners-up, which showed that we were able to compete in Africa. It also means that we should be able to compete in the world.”
He added that the presence of several stars in Nigeria’s squad makes them the right kind of team that should be at the Mundial, but the nephew of former Eagles’ captain, Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha stressed that they must work hard to get the ticket.
Iwobi posited, “We know that we have a lot of top quality players in our team. So, it’s only right that we should be there at the World Cup.
“But, it’s not enough to just keep saying it … we have to work hard to get there. It would be a shame if we don’t make it. So, we have to play with a lot of confidence and believe in ourselves.”
