Super Falcons midfielder Jennifer Echegini has declared that her ambition to achieve more with Nigeria remains stronger than ever, insisting that previous appearances at the World Cup and Olympics, alongside winning the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, have only increased her desire for further success.
The Paris Saint-Germain midfielder, speaking about her international career and Nigeria’s ambitions, explained that representing the Super Falcons carries a responsibility that goes beyond playing club football.
“The Super Falcons have a lot of fans, a lot of pride, a lot of history with their country, so there’s a lot of weight to carry,” Echegini said.
“I feel like there’s more responsibility than playing for a club would have.”
Echegini described wearing Nigeria’s colours as a privilege, acknowledging the passion of supporters and the significance of representing millions of Nigerians.
“Being able to be one out of hundreds of millions that we have as Nigerians, it’s an honour. It’s something I will forever be grateful for,” she stated.
Despite her achievements, the midfielder insists she is far from satisfied.
“I’ve pretty much been to the Olympics, the World Cup, I’ve won a WAFCON, but I want everything more. Times ten everything,” Echegini declared.
“I know I can give more.”
The Nigerian international stressed that her ambition is not necessarily driven by individual awards or financial rewards but by a determination to maximise her potential.
“I don’t strive to be necessarily the best in the world, to be the highest paid, but I want to look back five, ten years from now and feel fulfilled with the career that I had,” she explained.
Echegini also acknowledged the limited lifespan of a professional football career, making every opportunity to represent Nigeria particularly valuable.
“Football career is very short,” she said.
“Just making sure that I take advantage of the time that I’ve been given.”
For Echegini, past achievements are not the finish line. Her priority is to give everything she has while she can, help the Super Falcons achieve more and eventually retire without regrets.
