Nigerian striker Tolu Arokodare has been crowned the winner of the 2025 Ebony Shoe, awarded annually to the best African or African-descent footballer in Belgium.
The KRC Genk forward becomes the sixth Nigerian to win the prestigious accolade — and says the recognition is more than a trophy: it’s the fulfillment of a childhood dream.

“To walk in the footsteps of these great Nigerians — heroes I watched growing up — it’s more than an award. It’s a dream come true,” Arokodare said in his acceptance speech.
The 24-year-old enjoyed a standout 2024–25 season, scoring 21 goals in 38 matches, a key figure in Genk’s campaign, even as the club slipped from title contenders to a third-place finish.
Arokodare edged out strong competition including Union SG’s Noah Sadiki, Promise David, and Club Brugge’s Raphael Onyedika, as well as his Genk teammate Zakaria El Ouahdi.
The powerful forward was selected by a voting panel of club coaches, sports journalists, and national team staff — a group that cited his consistent match-winning performances as a major factor.
Arokodare paid tribute to the legacy of Nigerian greats who previously won the Ebony Shoe, including Daniel Amokachi, Victor Ikpeba, and Paul Onuachu.
“This award isn’t just mine — it belongs to every Nigerian kid who believes. I’m just a boy from Festac who worked hard and stayed focused,” he added.
Arokodare’s rise began at Kash Academy and Box2Box FC in Lagos, before moves to Latvia, Germany, France, and now Belgium, where he signed permanently with Genk in 2023.
With growing interest from clubs across Europe, the Genk striker says he remains grounded.
“I want to win with Genk. If bigger steps come, fine — but I’m focused on being better every day.”
His award underscores the continuing impact of Nigerian players in Belgium’s top flight, marking another proud moment for African football on the global stage.
