“It’s a Dream Come True” – Nwaiwu Reacts to Super Eagles Debut as Elegbeleye Charges NPFL Stars

Former Enyimba FC defender Chibuike Nwaiwu has described his maiden appearance for the Super Eagles as a “dream come true,” after making a surprise debut in the international friendly against the Iran national football team.

The 26-year-old centre-back, who recently completed a move to Trabzonspor, was drafted into the squad as a late replacement for the injured Calvin Bassey and was handed his first senior cap by head coach Eric Chelle.

Speaking on his rapid rise from the Nigeria Premier Football League to the international stage, Nwaiwu admitted the experience felt surreal.

“It’s a privilege for me to represent my country; it is the dream of every footballer in the world. I am very happy to be here and to have made my debut,” he said.

Despite facing a physically strong Iranian side with a reputation for consistent FIFA World Cup qualifications, the defender expressed pride in Nigeria’s performance and result.

Nwaiwu also revealed how excitement nearly cost him the opportunity after receiving his call-up while still at club level.

“When I received the message, I was so excited that I nearly missed my flight. Seeing the news and my club’s announcement was a truly great moment.”

He credited his rise to faith, persistence, and years of hard work in the domestic league, adding that representing Nigeria had always been a lifelong ambition.

With another test ahead against the Jordan national football team, Nwaiwu is now in contention to play a bigger role, as Chelle looks set to rely on his composure and versatility in defence.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the NPFL, Gbenga Elegbeleye, has praised the defender’s breakthrough as a major boost for the domestic league.

“This is a massive bragging right for the NPFL. It will motivate our league players to step up their game and attract attention from foreign clubs and national team selectors.”

Nwaiwu’s debut further strengthens the growing pathway between the NPFL and the Super Eagles, offering renewed hope to home-based talents aspiring to reach the highest level.

As Nigeria prepares for upcoming fixture, the former Enyimba man will be aiming to build on this milestone and cement his place in the national team setup.
