Italy, Canada Punch Olympic Tickets as IFAF Flag Football World Championships Reach Thrilling Finale

Italy and Canada have secured historic qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games after reaching the finals of the IFAF Flag Football World Championships Düsseldorf 2026 in dramatic fashion.

Italy booked its place in the men’s Olympic tournament after edging Canada 41-36 in a thrilling semifinal, while Canada claimed the first women’s Olympic qualification spot from Düsseldorf with an impressive 20-6 victory over world number-one Mexico.

The results mean Italy and Canada join the United States, which has already qualified as host nation, among the countries guaranteed to compete when flag football makes its historic Olympic debut at LA28.

The battle for the remaining Olympic place from the Düsseldorf championships will be decided in Sunday’s bronze-medal games. Mexico and Canada will meet in the men’s bronze-medal contest, while Mexico and Great Britain will fight for the women’s bronze and the coveted Olympic qualification spot.

The third day of competition produced some of the most dramatic action of the championship, with several of the world’s leading teams forced to fight back from difficult positions.

Mexico survived a one-point thriller against Spain, winning 27-26, while the United States defeated Germany 35-34 after trailing during the contest. The Americans later overcame Great Britain 27-21, while Great Britain defeated Panama 26-20.

In the men’s competition, the United States also survived difficult challenges, beating Japan 45-38 and Mexico 42-40, before Italy produced the day’s headline result by defeating Canada 41-36 to reach the final.

The United States will now defend both world titles in Sunday’s finals, with the men’s champions facing Italy at 3:00pm CET, before the women’s champions take on Canada at 4:30pm CET.

For Italy and Canada, however, the championship has already delivered a historic reward: Olympic qualification.

The developments in Düsseldorf also highlight the magnitude of Nigeria’s absence from the tournament. Nigeria’s men’s and women’s teams, who qualified after winning both titles at the 2025 IFAF Africa Flag Football Championships in Egypt, were withdrawn after the travelling delegation was unable to secure the necessary German visas in time.

Nigeria’s withdrawal denied the African champions the opportunity to compete against the world’s best at an event carrying direct significance for the LA28 qualification race.

The country’s Olympic dream, however, remains alive. Nigeria will have another route through the 2027 IFAF Continental Championships, where a top-two finish will earn qualification for the Olympic Qualifying Series, the final stage of the journey to Los Angeles.

As Düsseldorf prepares for the final day, Italy and Canada have already written their names into Olympic history, while the United States remains on course to defend its two world titles and another nation prepares to claim the final Olympic ticket available from the 2026 IFAF World Championships.
