‘It Was a Proper Test’ Awaziem Says Egypt Friendly Helped Super Eagles Spot Key Lessons

Super Eagles defender Chidozie Awaziem has described Nigeria’s 2–1 friendly defeat to Egypt as a valuable test, insisting the match served its purpose despite the result as the team prepares for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Speaking after the encounter, Awaziem said the coaching crew deliberately used the game to experiment with different structures and personnel.

“It was a good test for us. The coach tried different players and formations, and that was the aim of the game,” Awaziem said.

The defender explained that friendly matches are essential for assessing squad depth and tactical flexibility, especially with AFCON fast approaching.

“These games help you understand what works and what needs improvement before the tournament starts,” he added.

Awaziem stressed that the team is focused on taking positives from the match rather than dwelling on the scoreline.

“We’re not looking at the result too much. We’re focusing on the positives and learning from the game,” he noted.

He pointed out that Egypt offered strong opposition, making the friendly a realistic rehearsal for the intensity expected at AFCON.

“Egypt are a good team, so it was a serious test for us. Games like this prepare you mentally and physically,” he said.

The Super Eagles defender also emphasized the importance of unity and communication as the squad continues to gel.

“Some players are playing together for the first time, so understanding and communication are key,” Awaziem explained.

Looking ahead to AFCON, Awaziem expressed confidence that the team will be better organized and sharper by the time competitive action begins.

“We will keep improving. That’s why these matches are important,” he said.

He also urged fans to remain supportive, reminding them that preparation phases often involve trial and error.

“The fans should trust the process. The team is working hard and moving in the right direction,” Awaziem added.

As the Super Eagles now shift full focus to AFCON preparations, Awaziem’s assessment underlines a calm and measured approach, using lessons from the Egypt friendly to fine-tune performance ahead of Nigeria’s continental challenge.
