England forward Princess Ademiluyi experienced mixed emotions as her FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup journey ended against Nigeria, the country of her family roots, following the Young Lionesses’ 3-0 Round of 16 defeat.
For the 20-year-old No. 9, Thursday’s encounter carried a special personal significance because of her Nigerian heritage, even though her immediate responsibility was helping England fight for a quarter-final place.
Ademiluyi had acknowledged the significance of the fixture before kickoff.
“It’s amazing to play against Nigeria, but it doesn’t change the game,” she told England Football.
“When I step out onto that field I will show up like it’s any other game. After the game though, it’ll be nice to chat to a few of their players and see how they’re doing on their side.”
And Ademiluyi certainly made her presence felt.
After Tosin Rafiu gave Nigeria an early lead, the England striker emerged as one of her side’s biggest threats.
She was twice denied by Falconets goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma before winning a penalty that offered England a golden opportunity to equalise.
Rachel Maltby took the resulting spot kick, but Uzoma pushed her effort onto the crossbar.
Nigeria eventually pulled away after the interval, with Janet Akekoromowei and Mercy Mamudu adding to Rafiu’s opener to seal England’s elimination.
Despite the painful ending, facing Nigeria added a deeply personal chapter to Ademiluyi’s first U-20 World Cup experience.
The Peckham-raised forward, who developed through West Ham United’s academy, started all four of England’s matches at the tournament and scored in the 5-1 group-stage victory over Tanzania.
Ademiluyi had previously described appearing at her first World Cup as “surreal.” Facing Nigeria made that journey even more remarkable.
She walked onto the pitch representing England and left after facing the country of her roots — a World Cup encounter that ended in heartbreak, but carried a significance far beyond the final score.
