Islamic Solidarity Games: Sade Olatoye, Ogili Boost Nigeria’s Medal Haul in Riyadh

Nigeria’s athletes continued their impressive showing at the ongoing Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh, with Sade Olatoye and Ogochukwu Modesta Ogili adding two more medals to the country’s tally on Tuesday.

Shot putter Ogochukwu Modesta Ogili claimed silver in the women’s shot put event after a steady and confident performance across all six attempts.

Ogili opened with 6.94m and improved progressively before landing her best throw of 7.35m in the third round, securing her place on the podium.

The medal marks Nigeria’s second in athletics at the Games, following Obiageri Pamela Amaechi’s earlier silver in the discus event.

Bahrain’s Rooba Alomari clinched gold with a winning throw of 7.39m, while Saudi Arabia’s Nadha Alhumayolani took bronze with 6.13m.

In the women’s hammer throw, Sade Olatoye added another silver for Nigeria.

The national champion led the competition up to the fifth round before being overtaken by Algeria’s Tatar Zhara, who produced a winning mark of 63.55m. Olatoye, who fouled her final two attempts, settled for silver with a best effort of 63.34m, while Uzbekistan’s Zarinakhon Nosirjonova claimed bronze with 61.69m.

Nigeria also recorded promising performances on the track.

In the women’s 400m, Patience Okon George finished second in her heat with a time of 52.91s, behind Bahrain’s Salwa Eid Naser (52.13s).

Morocco’s Salma Lehlali placed third in 53.26s.

Meanwhile, sprinter Chioma Nweke advanced to the next round of the women’s 100m after finishing second in her heat in 11.64s.

She trailed Cameroon’s Kolle Tonjock (11.31s), while Azerbaijan’s Lamiya Valiyeva finished third in 11.75s.

Team Nigeria will look to build on these strong performances as the Games progress.
