As anticipation heightens for the 2025 Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) U-18/U-20 Championships, Nigeria’s promising sprinter, John Caleb, has declared himself ready to make the nation proud on the continental stage.
Caleb earned his spot on Team Nigeria after clinching victory in the 200m final at the national trials, clocking a time of 21.37 seconds (-1.1). Despite the win, the talented athlete admitted he had anticipated a faster finish.

“I wasn’t expecting the time to be like that because I came prepared, I was in very good shape, but eventually the wind spoiled the show,” Caleb explained.
The young sprinter expressed fulfilment at achieving his long-time goal of representing Nigeria at a major athletics event.
“I thank God for everything. I was able to perform well at the trials. I’ve been training for so long just to make the team, and I’m grateful to God that I eventually made it,” he said.
Caleb also commended the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) and the Nigeria Sports Commission (NSC) for organizing a high-quality training camp ahead of the championship.
“During the camp, I’ve been able to rest and recover very well for the main competition. I’m in great shape. The AFN has given us the very best at the camp,” he noted.
He went on to acknowledge the inclusive structure of the selection process and the support provided to the athletes.
“I want to thank the AFN and NSC for giving all the athletes a fair opportunity to participate in the trials. A lot of athletes ran their personal bests. The accommodation and overall support have been top-notch,” Caleb concluded.
The 2025 CAA U-18/U-20 Championships will be held from July 16 to 20 in Abeokuta, Ogun State, drawing over 700 athletes from across the continent. The event is expected to be a showcase of Africa’s emerging athletic talents and a launchpad for future stars.
