Ilechukwu Opens Up as Defenders Fire Rangers International Past Enyimba in Feisty Derby to Boost Title Push

Head coach Fidelis Ilechukwu has praised his defenders for stepping up offensively after Rangers International F.C. secured a hard-fought 2–1 victory over oriental rivals Enyimba F.C. in a tense Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) clash in Enugu.

The highly charged derby saw Enyimba take the lead just before halftime through Wonah Williams, but Rangers responded strongly after the break.

Defensive duo Chidozie Iwundu and Ifeanyi Onyebuchi turned the game around with crucial second-half goals, underlining the team’s growing resilience and tactical discipline.

Reflecting on the encounter, Ilechukwu highlighted the importance of collective contribution, especially from the backline.

“It was a tough derby as expected. We knew Enyimba would come strong, but our players showed character. I’m particularly pleased with the defenders—they stepped up when it mattered most,” he said.

The match, played at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium behind closed doors, lived up to its billing with intense battles across the pitch despite the absence of fans.

Ilechukwu also emphasized that the victory could prove decisive in the title race, as Rangers reclaimed top spot on the NPFL table with 59 points, edging ahead of close challengers.

“Every point counts at this stage. This win gives us confidence, but we must stay focused. The title race is still very open,” he added.

For Enyimba, the defeat deepens their struggles, leaving the nine-time champions hovering dangerously close to the relegation zone.

The result not only extends Rangers’ dominance in recent home fixtures but also reinforces their credentials as serious title contenders as the season heads into its final stretch.
