Ikpefan Says Nigeria Can Develop More Winter Sports Athletes

Nigeria’s cross-country skier Samuel Ikpefan has expressed confidence that the country has the potential to produce more winter sports athletes if the right structures and support systems are put in place.

Ikpefan, who represented Nigeria as the country’s sole athlete at the 2026 Winter Olympics, believes winter sports can grow significantly in the country with proper awareness and investment.

“Nigeria has what it takes to produce more skiers,” Ikpefan said.

The athlete explained that while winter sports are not traditionally associated with Nigeria, there are many Nigerians living abroad who train and compete in cold-weather disciplines.

“There are Nigerians in different parts of the world who can participate in winter sports,” he noted.

Ikpefan said his experience at the Olympics showed that athletes from countries without natural snow environments can still compete at the highest level if they receive the right support.

“With proper promotion and investment, the sport can grow,” he added.

According to him, one of the major steps toward developing winter sports in Nigeria is increasing awareness and encouraging young athletes to explore opportunities in disciplines such as skiing.

“We need to promote the sport so more people can see the possibilities,” he explained.

Ikpefan also stressed the importance of partnerships with international training centres and federations to help Nigerian athletes gain exposure and experience in winter sports.

“Support from sports bodies and proper training opportunities will make a big difference,” he said.

The Olympian concluded by expressing hope that his participation on the global stage can inspire other Nigerian athletes to consider winter sports as a viable path in their sporting careers.

“I hope more Nigerians will be encouraged to take up winter sports,” Ikpefan stated
