Ikpeba Says Super Eagles Focused on Nigeria, Not the NFF, Ahead of Crucial Playoffs

Former Super Eagles striker Victor Ikpeba says the national team remain fully focused on representing Nigeria and not the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) as they prepare for the high-stakes World Cup qualification playoffs.

With the country facing Gabon first and then potentially Cameroon or DR Congo, Ikpeba insists that the players are locked in on the task at hand and understand the magnitude of the opportunity before them.

According to Ikpeba, this is a second chance Nigeria must seize with absolute seriousness. He noted that the disappointment of the 2022 World Cup still lingers and that missing out again would be unacceptable given the quality and depth available in the current squad.

Ikpeba acknowledged that the ongoing controversies and administrative issues around the NFF have dominated headlines, but he stressed that the players have made a clear distinction between the off-field noise and their responsibility on the pitch. “The players are representing Nigeria, the people, and the flag. Their focus has nothing to do with NFF politics,” he said.

He described Gabon as a talented side but one that often struggles with consistency, a factor he believes Nigeria can exploit. However, he cautioned that the Super Eagles cannot afford complacency at this stage, noting that the playoffs will be decided by discipline, organisation, and mental readiness.

Ikpeba also warned against making unnecessary changes to the squad or disrupting team chemistry so close to the matches. He said stability is vital, especially with two decisive fixtures coming within a short period.

“This is not the moment for experiments. Stick with a core, keep the team settled, and build confidence,” he advised.

The former African Footballer of the Year urged Nigerians to rally behind the team, insisting that unity and positivity will be crucial as the Eagles look to secure their place at the 2026 World Cup.
