Ikpeba Says DR Congo Are “Destined” For The World Cup After Stunning Nigeria

Former Super Eagles striker and African Footballer of the Year, Victor Ikpeba, has tipped DR Congo to go all the way to the 2026 FIFA World Cup after their dramatic victory over Nigeria in the CAF Playoff final in Rabat.

Ikpeba, who worked as a pundit during the match, described the performance of the Leopards as “shocking, courageous and worthy of global recognition,” insisting that the team showed qualities that can carry them through the intercontinental playoff.

The former Monaco and Borussia Dortmund star said he was deeply impressed by DR Congo’s tactical discipline, fighting spirit and second-half resurgence, noting that the game marked a symbolic turning point for Congolese football.

According to Ikpeba, what DR Congo displayed was more than just a football match—it was, in his words, “a renaissance.”

He highlighted the passion and emotional drive of the Congolese players throughout the 120 minutes, pointing out that despite Nigeria’s early dominance, the Leopards refused to panic and gradually imposed their rhythm on the match.

Ikpeba noted that while Nigeria had the bigger names and were the favourites on paper, DR Congo showed superior composure, especially in extra time, where they looked fitter, more organised, and mentally stronger.

He admitted that he didn’t expect such a high-level performance from the Leopards but was pleasantly surprised by their intensity after the break.

“I didn’t see this coming,” Ikpeba said. “The way they came out in the second half and in extra time was remarkable. They looked like a team fuelled by purpose.”

Ikpeba, who played at two World Cups for Nigeria, added that DR Congo’s passion—both in the dressing room and from fans back home—could be the driving force that takes them back to the global stage for the first time since 1974.

In closing, he urged Nigerians to accept the defeat with dignity and give the Congolese team the credit they deserve.
