Ikpeba Applauds Chelle’s Transformation of Super Eagles After World Cup Playoff Qualification

Former Nigeria international and 1997 African Footballer of the Year, Victor Ikpeba, has praised Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle for transforming the team and reviving Nigeria’s World Cup qualification hopes after a commanding 4–0 victory over Benin Republic in Uyo.

Speaking in reaction to the win, Ikpeba commended Chelle for stabilizing the team and guiding them to the playoff round despite a turbulent start to the qualifiers. He said the former Mali coach’s tactical discipline and man-management skills have restored confidence within the squad and among fans.

“You have to give Coach Chelle credit. He came in when confidence was low, when results were poor, and he’s managed to get the boys believing again. The football is now more organized, more purposeful,” Ikpeba said.

The former AS Monaco star also lauded the Nigerian players for responding positively to Chelle’s leadership, emphasizing that the blend of youth and experience in the team has started yielding results.

“You can see the difference — everyone knows their role now. From the defense to the attack, there’s structure and intent. The team looks united again,” he added.

Ikpeba attributed Nigeria’s early struggles in the qualifiers to inconsistency in tactics and coaching changes but expressed optimism that the new direction under Chelle would lead to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“We had a slow start, and that nearly cost us. But Chelle has steadied the ship. What’s important now is maintaining focus ahead of the playoffs. This victory shows we’re back on track,” he said.

He concluded by urging Nigerians to rally behind the team as they prepare for the decisive playoff round in Morocco, stressing that unity and support will be key to crossing the final hurdle.

“We’ve seen what this team can do when everyone believes. The players have shown heart — now the entire country must stand behind them,” Ikpeba stated.
