Ikpe Ekong Confesses: I Went To China For Cash

Former Super Eagles midfielder, Prince Ikpe Ekong has confessed that he moved to China at the twilight of his career simply because he could not resit the cash allure offered in The Oriental Nation.

Taking a critical look back on his career in a no-holds-barred chat with sports247.ng, Ikpe revealed that money was the reason why he left Europe to play in China.

The ex-player, who shot to limelight with AC Reggiana of Italy, added that he took the plunge in Asia simply because he wanted to settle down financially.

However, while reflecting on his experience in China, the Ajegunle, Lagos-born former Julius Berger FC of Lagos star advised up and coming footballers to always think of their future after playing the game.

Ikpe stressed: “I won’t mind telling young players of nowadays to try and capitalise on the opportunity of playing in China.

“It is good to think of playing in Europe for fame, but we must not forget the opportunities that China provides.

“At the same time, we must not forget to tell those currently playing in the Chinese league now to invest their money wisely.

“Once you get a good transfer to where you can make more money, you need to invest wisely, to keep you going even after retirement.”
