Iheozu Ecstatic After Late Winner Secures Quarter-Final Spot For Nigeria

Super Falcons striker Chiwendu Iheozu was the hero on Thursday evening as her 89th-minute goal handed Nigeria a narrow 1-0 victory over a stubborn Botswana side in their Group B encounter at the 13th Women Africa Cup of Nations.

The victory sealed Nigeria’s passage to the quarter-finals ahead of their final group match against Algeria. Iheozu, who came off the bench, delivered a clutch moment just when it seemed Botswana might escape with a draw.

“I’m beyond happy,” the striker said. “Scoring for my country is always special, but doing it in such a crucial game is something I will never forget.”

It was a tense game at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium, with Nigeria dominating possession but struggling to break down Botswana’s disciplined defence. Iheozu credited her teammates and the coaching staff for the support that made her match-winning moment possible.

“The coach trusted me to make an impact, and I’m glad I could repay that. Everyone played their part. It was a team win.”

The striker’s performance has sparked excitement among fans, with many calling for her to start the final group match against Algeria. Iheozu, however, remains focused on helping the team however she can. “Whether I start or come in as a substitute, I just want to contribute.”

She acknowledged the pressure that comes with playing for the nine-time African champions. “Every team wants to beat us, so we have to keep proving ourselves. We’ve qualified for the quarters, but we’re not done yet.”

With Algeria next, Iheozu believes momentum is key. “This win gives us belief. Now we must finish strong against Algeria and go into the knockout stage with confidence.”
