Iheanacho, Moffi On Target Europa League Phase Begins

Kelechi Iheanacho and Terem Moffi were both on target as Celtic and OGC Nice kicked off their UEFA Europa League group stage campaigns on Wednesday night.

At the Marakana, Iheanacho continued his bright start at Celtic by scoring in a 1-1 draw against Red Star Belgrade.

The Scottish champions earned a hard-fought point in Belgrade, with both sides creating chances in a cautious but competitive contest.

Former Premier League forwards Iheanacho and Marko Arnautovic were the second-half scorers.

Iheanacho, reunited with Brendan Rodgers after a late summer transfer, replaced Daizen Maeda at halftime and made an immediate impact.

After missing a close-range effort moments earlier, the Nigerian striker latched onto a clever pass from Benjamin Nygren before slotting past goalkeeper Matheus.

Red Star, who had dominated much of the first half, eventually drew level when Austrian veteran Arnautovic bundled home during a scrappy goalmouth exchange.

Celtic looked sharper following Iheanacho’s introduction but were forced to withstand late pressure from the hosts, ultimately holding on for a valuable point at a notoriously difficult venue.

Elsewhere, another Super Eagles forward, Terem Moffi, found the net for OGC Nice in their 2-1 home defeat to AS Roma at the Allianz Riviera.

Moffi, introduced in the 62nd minute, converted from the penalty spot in the 77th minute to reduce the deficit after goals from Roma defenders Evan Ndicka and Gianluca Mancini had put the visitors in control.

Despite a spirited late push, Nice could not find an equaliser as Roma secured all three points to start their campaign on a winning note.
