Venerable Adediji said this during an exclusive interview with Sports247 at the school’s premises, when officials of Lagos State Football Association (LSFA) made a presentation of branded items to the institution.

He thanked the delegation that was led by LSFA vice-chairman, Mr Dotun Coker, for making the presentation of equipment branded by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), which he described as a rare honour.

Adediji said with a tone of excitement in his voice, “It’s a big honour and a great thing to have CAF representatives at our school, through Lagos State Football Association.

“We are equally delighted to have them and host them. We say a very big thank you to them for coming to Igbobi College, Yaba.”

He then spoke about the efforts that everyone at the first generation school put in regularly to ensure they maintain the values of sports among students, hence their top positions at a recent competition.

He further disclosed, “We finished a tournament recently and, by God’s grace, our students from Igbobi College defeated all other schools in football and basketball. We carried the day and won all the events.

“So, to the glory of God, we are showing that school sports is not dead; we only need to encourage more all the talents we have at the grassroots.

“Grassroots sports needs to be revisited. We have raw materials that can make us proud as a nation. We have talents who can play in the Flying Eagles, Super Eagles, Super Falcons and the rest.”

He concluded with a charge to government officials at the state and federal levels to come out with policies that would bring about the revival of school sports in Nigeria.

“The government in this country needs to do more by coming to the grassroots to see raw talents that we have. We should develop them and make use of them.

“Government officials should come to see young boys and girls showcase their talents, then start grooming them. Before you know it, we will even win the World Cup,” Adediji predicted.
