At 24 years old, Grace Adeyemi, a field hockey player from Ibadan, Oyo State, is proving that passion and persistence can keep a dream alive — even when the odds seem stacked against you.
Representing Ibadan Blades Hockey Club, Grace has become one of Nigeria’s most determined young athletes, earning respect in regional tournaments for her fierce defending and tireless work ethic.

Her journey began at just 15, during an inter-school sports competition. While classmates gravitated toward football and athletics, Grace was captivated by hockey’s speed and precision.
With no access to proper equipment, she trained with borrowed sticks and old tennis balls. “We made do with whatever we could find,” she recalls. “What mattered was getting better every day.”
Since 2018, Grace has represented Oyo State in local and regional competitions, including the Oyo State Sports Festival and the Southwest Hockey Invitational.
Her performances earned her a call-up to the state senior team, but like many athletes in less-publicised sports, her progress has been slowed by lack of funding, sponsorship, and exposure.
“Hockey doesn’t get the attention it deserves in Nigeria,” she says. “Many of us train hard, but without sponsorship or media coverage, we remain unseen.”
For Grace, the dream extends beyond personal success — she wants to help put Nigerian hockey on the map and inspire more girls to take up the sport.
Balancing sport with a part-time teaching job, she trains every morning and uses her own savings to buy equipment and travel to tournaments. Coaches praise her commitment, describing her as “a player with heart and discipline.”
Now, Grace’s next target is the National Sports Festival, where she hopes a strong performance will attract sponsors and scouts.
Her story is one of quiet resilience — a reminder that even in the shadows of Nigeria’s major sports, athletes like Grace Adeyemi continue to push forward, driven by belief, hard work, and a dream to make their country proud.
